He doesn't know what is happening with the orphans now. Later, in the final episode when Beatrice II is looking for Lemony it changes his narrations. In the show he actually does, and that changes things. In the story The Penultimate Peril, Lemony didn't see the kids - at least that was never said. When it all happens isn't clear, and the book fleshes it out more than the books, but even then that's down to one big change the series made in the fifth and sixth episodes.
